Cleared to Pack

Can you bring deodorant on a plane?

Yes, with limits. Solid stick deodorant has no size limit in carry-ons. Gel, liquid and spray deodorant must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less in your carry-on; in checked bags, aerosols are capped at 18 oz (500 ml) per can.

Carry-on bagWith limits

Solid (stick) deodorant is allowed in any size. Gel, roll-on/liquid and aerosol spray deodorants are allowed only in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, packed in your quart-size liquids bag.

Checked bagWith limits

All types are allowed in checked bags. Aerosol and liquid deodorants fall under FAA toiletry limits: no container over 0.5 kg (18 oz) or 500 ml (17 fl oz), all such toiletries together no more than 2 kg (70 oz) or 2 L (68 fl oz) per person, and spray nozzles must be capped.

Checked against official TSA, FAA and government pages on . These are US rules unless we say otherwise; the TSA officer at the checkpoint makes the final call.

The rules in numbers

  • Stick/solid deodorant: no limit in carry-on or checked
  • Gel, roll-on and spray deodorant in carry-on: 3.4 oz (100 ml) per container, in your quart-size bag
  • Checked aerosols/liquids: max 0.5 kg (18 oz) or 500 ml (17 fl oz) per container
  • Checked total for all restricted toiletries: 2 kg (70 oz) or 2 L (68 fl oz) per person
  • Aerosol button or nozzle must be protected by a cap or similar to prevent accidental release

Packing tips

  • Switching to a solid stick is the easiest way to free up room in your quart bag.
  • Gel and clear-gel 'sticks' that are soft or squeezable count as gels, so keep them 3.4 oz or under in a carry-on.
  • Keep the original cap on spray cans in checked bags; a loose nozzle can discharge under pressure from other items.

Outside the US

  • UKGOV.UK lists spray deodorant as a liquid: 100 ml per container at most UK airports (some with newer scanners allow up to 2 litres); solid sticks are not on its liquids list. Source
  • EULiquid, gel and spray deodorants must be 100 ml or less per container in one transparent bag of up to 1 litre. Source
