Cleared to Pack

Can you bring perfume on a plane?

Yes, with limits. Carry-on perfume or cologne must be in bottles of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less inside your quart-size bag. In checked bags each bottle can be up to 17 fl oz (500 ml), within a 68 fl oz (2 L) per-person toiletry total.

Carry-on bagWith limits

TSA allows perfume and cologne in carry-on bags only in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, packed in your one quart-size liquids bag.

Checked bagWith limits

Allowed in checked bags, but the FAA counts perfume and cologne as restricted toiletries: each container may hold no more than 0.5 kg (18 oz) or 500 ml (17 fl oz), and all such toiletries together may not exceed 2 kg (70 oz) or 2 L (68 fl oz) per person.

Checked against official TSA, FAA and government pages on . These are US rules unless we say otherwise; the TSA officer at the checkpoint makes the final call.

The rules in numbers

  • Carry-on: 3.4 oz (100 ml) per bottle, in your quart-size bag
  • Checked: max 500 ml (17 fl oz) / 0.5 kg (18 oz) per bottle
  • Checked total for restricted toiletries (perfume, hairspray, nail polish, aerosols etc.): 2 L (68 fl oz) / 2 kg (70 oz) per person
  • Aerosol body sprays: nozzle must be capped

Packing tips

  • A 3.4 oz (100 ml) bottle is exactly the carry-on maximum, so a standard 100 ml perfume is fine, but a 125 ml or 150 ml bottle is not.
  • Duty-free fragrance bought abroad on a connecting trip may be rescreened in the US; keep it sealed with the receipt, and pack it in checked luggage at your connection if possible.
  • Glass bottles in checked bags are safest wrapped in clothing inside a sealed plastic bag.

Outside the US

  • UKPerfumes are on GOV.UK's liquids list: 100 ml containers at most UK airports (some allow up to 2 litres), and duty-free bought airside is allowed if sealed in a security bag with the receipt visible. Source
  • EUEach container must be 100 ml or less in a 1-litre transparent bag; duty-free liquids are allowed if kept sealed in the security bag provided at purchase. Source
