Cleared to Pack

Can you bring a massage gun on a plane?

Yes. TSA allows massagers in carry-on and checked bags. Massage guns use lithium batteries, so keep them in your carry-on; if checked, they must be fully off and protected from switching on. Batteries over 100 Wh need airline approval.

Carry-on bagAllowed

Allowed in carry-on bags. FAA says lithium-battery devices should be carried in the cabin; installed batteries up to 100 Wh need no approval.

Checked bagWith limits

Allowed in checked bags only if completely powered off and protected from accidental activation or damage. Spare or detachable spare batteries must go in your carry-on.

Checked against official TSA, FAA and government pages on . These are US rules unless we say otherwise; the TSA officer at the checkpoint makes the final call.

The rules in numbers

  • Massagers: TSA allows in carry-on and checked bags
  • Lithium-ion batteries: up to 100 Wh allowed without approval; 101-160 Wh needs airline approval; over 160 Wh forbidden
  • Lithium battery devices in checked bags: completely powered off and protected from accidental activation or damage
  • Spare lithium batteries and power banks: carry-on only, terminals protected from short circuit

Packing tips

  • Massage guns can look like power tools on the X-ray; packing them in their case near the top of your bag speeds a secondary check.
  • Check the Wh rating on the battery; if it shows only volts and mAh, Wh = V x mAh / 1,000.
  • If your carry-on is gate-checked, take out any detachable spare battery and keep it with you.

Outside the US

  • CanadaCATSA allows massage guns in carry-on with batteries up to 100 Wh, and 101-160 Wh only with airline approval; spare batteries must be individually protected. Source
